Pediatric Osteopathy Care
Supporting little bodies and growing families
Every baby is unique, and so is their journey into the world.
From pregnancy and birth to feeding, settling and reaching developmental milestones, your baby’s body experiences many changes in those early months.
At Family First Holistic Hub, we understand that these early stages can bring questions and uncertainties. You may notice your baby prefers turning their head one way, has difficulty latching, appears uncomfortable in certain positions or has movement patterns you’re unsure about.
Our pediatric osteopathy appointments offer a welcoming space to discuss your concerns, assess your baby’s musculoskeletal health, and explore ways to support comfort and development.
How Can Pediatric Osteopathy Help?
Pediatric osteopathy focuses on assessing your baby’s muscles, joints, movement and physical development, while considering their pregnancy and birth history, feeding experiences and overall health.
Some common reasons parents seek an appointment
-
Flat spots (plagiocephaly), head-turning preferences, torticollis and restrictions in neck movement. Assessment can help identify relevant musculoskeletal factors, with treatment, positioning advice and exercises offered where appropriate.
-
Feeding difficulties can involve several factors, including your baby’s jaw and neck mobility, positioning and oral function. We can assess associated musculoskeletal tension and movement restrictions, using techniques such as soft tissue and myofascial treatment where appropriate. When needed, we work alongside lactation consultants and other qualified professionals to support a comprehensive approach to feeding concerns.
-
If your baby appears uncomfortable during feeding, prefers particular positions or has difficulty settling, we can assess whether any musculoskeletal concerns may be contributing to their discomfort. We also consider feeding and medical factors and can recommend additional support when needed.
-
Every birth is different. Whether your baby arrived through a vaginal birth, caesarean or assisted delivery, their birth history helps us understand their early movement patterns and any concerns you may have noticed.
-
We can assess concerns involving tummy time, rolling, movement asymmetries, neck mobility and other early physical milestones, providing practical, age-appropriate advice and activities where indicated.
Our Treatment Approach
Every baby is assessed individually, and treatment is tailored to their age, development and clinical findings.
Depending on their needs, appointments may include osteopathic soft tissue and myofascial techniques, assessment of jaw and neck mobility, movement-based treatment, positioning advice and age-appropriate exercises.
We believe that parent education is just as valuable as the hands-on component of care. Our aim is to help you better understand your baby’s presentation and provide practical strategies you can confidently use at home.
Some concerns, particularly reflux, tongue or lip ties and feeding difficulties, may require assessment or management by other healthcare professionals. Osteopathic care focuses on relevant musculoskeletal concerns and may form part of a broader, collaborative approach where appropriate.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
We’ve built in extra time because we know life with a baby doesn’t always run on schedule!
Your appointment begins with a conversation about your concerns, pregnancy and birth history, feeding, development and anything else you’ve noticed about your baby.
We’ll then complete a physical assessment, explain our findings and discuss a suitable management plan. Where appropriate, this may include hands-on osteopathic treatment, practical positioning advice, exercises or activities to continue at home.
We also want parents to feel comfortable asking questions and being actively involved throughout the appointment.
And of course, babies need breaks!
Whether your little one needs a cuddle, a feed, a nappy change or time to settle, we will aim to accommodate these everyday moments.
Preparing for Your Visit
We encourage you to bring anything your baby may need to feel comfortable, such as nappies, wipes, spare clothes, feeding supplies, a favourite comfort item and any relevant medical information.
Breastfeeding is always welcome. If you’d prefer some privacy during a feed, please let us know, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
Partners and support people are also welcome to attend.
